NINOTCHKA (U) + Q&A 3 Dec 8:30pm Curzon Wimbledon

NINOTCHKADirected by Ernst Lubitsch. USA 1939, 110 mins (U)
Post-screening Q&A with film historian Nick Smedley
NB film starts promptly at 8.30pm
Garbo stars in a comedy romance. Gone is any trace of the tragic actor, as she plays a strait-laced Russian commissar sent to Paris on official business. Inculcated with loathing for Western values, she meets a roué (Mervyn Douglas) out to charm her. An astute political satire that portends things to come in Soviet-US relations. With both Lubitsch and Billy Wilder involved in scriptwriting, the film has become a classic. We welcome back Nick Smedley, who has written a book about Lubitsch, for the Q&A.
'Ninotchka stands as one of the finest films Lubitsch made. It was reportedly one of the director's own favorites among his films, and it's easy to see why.' Matt Bailey, Not Coming to a Theater Near You
